Green Alliance businesses win at 2011 Building New Hampshire Awards

2011 New Hampshire Building Awards

Congratulations to the four Green Alliance Business Partners who were among the Granite State builders, architects, and homeowners named winners at the 2011 Building New Hampshire Awards.

The announcements were made today at an awards breakfast held at the Residence Inn/Portsmouth Harbor Events & Conference Center, also a Green Alliance Business Partner, not to mention New Hampshire’s first LEED-certified hotel and conference facility.

Winning entries were selected in recognition of their work to build, remodel, or retrofit an energy-efficient, high-performance residence or commercial building. The award-winning projects were all designed and built to minimize their carbon footprint and impact on the environment. Energy Star, LEED, ReGreen, and National Green Building Standard certified projects were all granted equal consideration.

“The winners of the 2011 Building New Hampshire Awards are the people to watch,” said Kathy Poggi, principal of Seacoast Ink and producer of the awards program. “They’re the ones who are producing some of the most innovative, sustainable building and remodeling projects in the Granite State.”

Green Alliance Director Sarah Brown was also on hand at the event to cheer on our Business Partners and meet new friends.

“It was really exciting being in a room full of innovators,” said Brown. “These are the companies who are succeeding because they understand peoples’ desire to save energy and build high quality, sustainable buildings that stand the test of time.”

Regeneration Park, the brain child of Green Alliance Business Partners Simply Green and TMS Architects, was one of just two projects selected for the commercial remodel and retrofits award, in recognition of its conversion of the former Edwards Toyota retail automotive showroom on Lafayette Road in Portsmouth into a sustainable, multi-use green office and retail building.

Two Green Alliance Business Partners also took home awards in the residential home building category: Ridgeview Construction and Ultra Geothermal.

On top of all that, the 2011 Building New Hampshire Awards were sponsored in part by Green Alliance Business Partner Revision Energy!

“I was really proud to see six Green Alliance business involved in this event,” said a beaming Brown.

Ridgeview supports Habitat for Humanity to go green

Habitat for Humanity has long been known for its work on behalf of affordable housing. Now, two of the Southeastern New Hampshire chapter’s projects are adding their own, green twist.
Southeastern New Hampshire Habitat is currently completing construction of a two-family duplex on Silver Street in Rochester. Along the way, they were aided by Shane Carter and Ridgeview Construction, a company known for its environmentally-friendly methods and approaches to home building.

The Deerfield-based Ridgeview helped with much of the site work, excavation and foundation and is poised to help with the frame. The end result? The two most recent Habitat homes will end up with EnergyStar certification. Both Ridgeview and Habitat’s ReStore – a repurposing outlet boasting everything from paint to plywood to furniture, located in Dover –  are longstanding members of Green Alliance, through which Southeastern Habitat President Tom Boisvert and Shane Carter met.

“Shane and I had talked a few times about working together on a Habitat house,” said Tom Boisvert. “He always wanted to help with a project, and when that opportunity finally came, he jumped at it.”

Long before any official partnership was formed, Carter would often donate materials and supplies leftover from renovation jobs to the ReStore, all of whose profits go directly to Habitat for Humanity.

As with their ReStore donations, Carter believed offering up his company’s time, effort and materials was simply the right thing to do.

“It’s just a part of our company culture and belief system to give back and serve the greater good,” said Carter, whose company recently won the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of New Hampshire’s Bronze Cornerstone Award for New Green Construction. “Two things we strive to do are to build homes that help the environment, and to give back to the community.”

“We look at it as, each house that sells means more cash for Habitat, and therefore more homes for people who need them,” he said.

Ridgeview will also be involved – this time from start to finish – on Habitat’s next house, a single family home in Rochester slated to be started within the next month. After that? According to Carter, the sky’s the limit for the new partnership.

“I really hope we continue doing this well into the future,” Carter exclaimed. “Tom and the rest of the crew at Habitat have done a phenomenal job, and we’re proud to be a part of that in any way we can.”

To date, the Habitat’s Southeast New Hampshire chapter has helped build 20 affordable homes for families in the area. Going forward, Boivert hopes they can eventually succeed in constructing three to five of the homes a year.

Boisvert, who like Carter worked for years in the construction and development industries, echoes Carter’s enthusiasm.

“Having a company like Ridgeview who really know what they’re doing and build with quality and efficiency in mind really helps make these houses something special,” said Boisvert. “We really feel like we’re giving these family’s something that’s a cut above.”

Next week, Boisvert and Habitat will be donating their time to the United Way’s Day of Caring, held every year in locations throughout the country.

Cornerstone Award 2009

Deerfield Business Wins Cornerstone Award

In less than a decade, builder Shane Carter and his team at Ridgeview Construction have made their home-construction business one of the greenest and most sustainable anywhere in New England.  So it wasn’t a surprise when Ridgeview was recently awarded the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of New Hampshire’s Cornerstone “Gold” medal for new and custom homes in the $450 to $600K price range.  The annual prize, while certainly not expected, did not come as a total shock:  Ridgeview is booked solid.  For Carter, such success amidst tough economic times provides vindication for Ridgeview’s unique and progressive business model.

“I think our success and appeal has a lot to do on the one hand with the green, sustainable niche in which we operate,” says Carter. “But primary to that is the fact that we just do quality work period, regardless of materials, not to mention the high level of customer satisfaction. So really it’s all of these things in tandem.”

Located in Deerfield, New Hampshire, Ridgeview applies sustainable building design, construction and materials to each and every project. From planning, preparing and positioning the home to utilize maximum solar gain, through construction and clean energy solutions, all the way to kitchen remodeling and putting the final coat of paint on the bedroom walls; Ridgeview offers customizable, sustainable options for literally every aspect of the home-building process.

Nearly all of Ridgeview’s materials are either recycled or sourced from within 500 miles of their NH headquarters, and they partner with other sustainability minded business to provide the highest quality homes possible – both in their outward appearance as well as in their sheer, cost-effective and sustainable functionality.
While most big-ticket construction companies operate according to a philosophy of “more, cheaper, faster”, Carter goes to great lengths to emphasize the idea that, sometimes, paying a little more up front for quality and performance means saving more down the road. “Building and buying a home is one of the biggest decisions you will ever make,” explains Carter. “And we want to build something that you and yours can live in and be proud of for a long time.”

While Carter and his crew won the Cornerstone award in the “New and Custom” homes category, Ridgeview could just as easily have won for the “High-Quality and Green” category: all timber used for the frame was recycled from previous buildings; the wood used in the tongue-grooved ceilings was harvested and milled in New Hampshire; the flooring was recycled using laminate layers of plywood with a top veneer of re-used quality cherry; not to mention a state-of-the art geothermal system with an on-demand water heater.

Carter’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the building process and into every crevice of Ridgeview’s business practices. All of their fleet vehicles use biodiesel provided by Simply Green in Portsmouth, and even Carter’s home office utilizes the best in quality CFL and LED lighting, and soy-based ink-cartridges and recycled paper for all the companies printed materials.  Carter also recently completed a carbon footprint assessment at terrapass.com, earning a white ribbon (the best possible score), an indication that his company’s emissions are far below the norm for a company of Ridgeview’s size.

When not tending to his ever-growing business, Carter maintains a high community profile, serving on the board of the NH branch of the US Green Building Council, and the National Association of Home Builders Certification Program and the Green Building subcommittee for the city of Manchester.  Carter also donates a portion of his company’s profits to the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, as well as to a local arts association.  He and his team regularly attend conferences and seminars on green building and sustainability issues, assuring that Ridgeview is prepared to leverage the newest in green building products and technologies and apply it on the ground here in New Hampshire.
